1. Is chair massage a specific massage or is it Shiatsu in a chair?
At its most generic, chair massage is massage–any massage–that is done on a client seated in a chair–any chair. People have adapted Swedish techniques, with or without oil, Trager work, Rolfing, NMT, as well as various styles of acupressure massage. However, that having been said, acupressure massage (any bodywork based on principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine–TCM) seems ideally suited to chair massage. Unlike Swedish techniques, most acupressure can be done through the clothing without any lubrication or skin-to-skin contact.

Practitioners find that when they try to adapt Swedish techniques without oil, they are limited to kneading techniques that quickly tire the hands. Since acupressure relies on leverage, not strength, a very deep massage can be given with little effort.

Touchpro Chair Massage is based on traditional Japanese acupressure massage, called Amma (Anma). This was the style of massage that David Palmer, touchpro’s founder, originally studied and taught in his school from 1982 until 1989

Shiatsu is another style of Japanese massage that typically uses acupressure techniques.

2. I have a master’s in physical therapy at an osteopathic institute and do hands-on techniques daily. Would your course be open to me?
Yes, you would be able to attend the course. However, in the interests of full disclosure, you should be aware that touchpro chair massage work is not massage therapy. That is to say, it is not a treatment modality. Rather the functional intention of our work is to enhance circulation in our clients so that their own inherent self-healing mechanisms can operate at their highest level. With that limitation in mind, you would be welcome into our program.
